WHEN PARENTS’ PROBLEMS AFFECT THEIR CHILDREN’S MENTAL HEALTH
Many times, we believe that adult problems stay between adults—but that is not always the case. Children watch, listen, and most importantly, they feel.
Constant arguments, lack of communication, financial struggles, separation, addiction, or a home filled with tension can leave deep emotional wounds in children and teenagers.
Sometimes they don’t know how to say, “This is affecting me.” Instead, they express it in other ways: they isolate themselves, their behavior changes, they experience anger, fear, or sadness, or they begin looking outside the home for the understanding and attention they need.
As parents, we also go through difficult times. But our children should not have to carry emotional burdens that do not belong to them.
Listen before judging. Observe before punishing. Ask before assuming.
Protecting our children’s mental health also means taking a closer look at the environment we are creating within our own homes.
Sometimes, helping a child begins when we, as parents, recognize that there are things within ourselves that also need healing.
